Dr Abel Mwale

President


Dr Abel Mwale is a Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care with experience in both the public and private sectors. He is a fellow of CANECSA (College of Anaesthesiologists of East, Central and Southern Africa). He is currently the Secretary General of the African Regional Section (ARS) of World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA).
Dr Mwale currently serves as President of the Society of Anaesthetists of Zambia and is the council member and country representative of the College of Anaesthesiologists of East, Central and Southern Africa (CANECSA) where he also serves on the examinations committee.
He is a trainer in management of surgical emergencies, emergency medicine and first aid. Serves as consultant in the formulation of health strategies in the first, second and third level hospitals. He is a lecturer under the Specialty Training programme (STP).

Dr Sompwe L. Mwansa-Chanda

Secretary General


Dr Sompwe L. Mwansa-Chanda is an Anaesthesiologist practicing at Ndola Teaching Hospital where she also serves as faculty for the Specialist Training Programme. She is driven by a passion for research, the delivery of safe anaesthesia and patient safety. This has allowed her to be actively involved in the development of protocols, training curricula at various levels and in the training of all levels of health care workers.
Dr Mwansa currently serves as Secretary General of the Society of Anaesthetists of Zambia and is also chairperson of the Policy and Guidelines Committee. She has an active role in the Research Committee and is keen to help the Society expand its reach.
She is passionate about advancing anaesthesia as a speciality in Zambia and is excited about the opportunities to learn more about anaesthesia and share that knowledge with other trainee and established anaesthetic providers in order to expand anaesthetic services in Zambia and beyond.

Dr Arthur Polela

Treasurer


Dr Arthur Polela is Senior Registrar at the Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital having moved from the University Teaching Hopsital, were he spent over 8 years, starting out as an intern, rising through the ranks to the position of Senior Registrar.
Dr Polela has been in involved with numerous projects within anaesthesia aimed at improving patient safety as well as improving quality of anaesthesia training evident as he leads the, soon to be concluded “ Regional Anaesthesia Project “ which is supported by the Tropical Health and Education Trust-THET and run by the Global Anaesthesia Development Project (GADP) and the Society of Anaesthetists of Zambia (SAZ). His involvement in helping develop regional anaesthesia in Zambia led to his recent appointment as an ambassador of the African Society of Regional Anaesthesia.
Dr Polela is a passionate global health advocate working towards improving access to safer anaesthesia and surgical services. He currently serves as treasurer of SAZ where together with executive, lobby for improved working conditions for members among other matters patterning to the provision of Anaesthesia and Critical Care in Zambia.
In his free time he is an ardent follower of Finance and Investment and serves as a board member of Medcop, A Zambian cooperative that offers financial services to its members.

Dr Chalwe Mutesa-Mwewa

Publicity Secretary


Dr. Chalwe Mutesa-Mwewa is a medical doctor and a graduate of Dalian Medical University, China. She completed her medical studies in 2014.
Dr. Mutesa-Mwewa is currently specializing in Anaesthesia and Critical Care at the University of Zambia, and is also currently serving as an Executive member of the Society of Anaesthetists of Zambia, in the position of Publicity Secretary. Her passions include continuous medical education and quality improvement within the hospital setting. She is a wife and mother of one. Her hobbies include traveling, cultural exchanges and fine dining.

Dr Jullien Chomba

Committee Member


Dr Jullien Chomba is an Anaesthesiologist with a strong interest in patient safety, paediactric anaesthesia, education and perioperative Medicine. Her time is spent in clinical practice, conducting teaching sessions and undertaking research with a heavy bias towards patient safety. She participates in clinical teaching across the educational continuum from medical students to trainees in different specialities. She currently serves on the Society of Anaesthetists of Zambia as a committee member in the executive and is also the chairperson of the Patient Safety Committee, and an active member of both the Training and Research committees of SAZ. Additionally she is the head of the Department of Anaesthesia and Critical Care at Arthur Davison Children’s Hospital and is a founding fellow both of CANECSA and ZACOMS.

Dr Imraan Ahmed

Committee Member


Dr Imraan Ahmed is currently a Senior Registrar in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care in Lusaka.
He holds a Masters of Medicine (MMed) in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care and is also a Fellow of the College of Anaesthesiologists of East, Central & Southern Africa.
His passions lie in clinical teaching and education. He strives to see many young physicians specializing in the field of anaesthesia and growing the fraternity in the region. In addition, he would want to see a time where we become a center of clinical excellence for the region.
