Our History

History of SAZ

The Society of Anaesthetists of Zambia (SAZ) has its origins in the early 1970s. It was started by expatriate Anaesthesiologists of Zambia with Dr Casale as its first president and the Society held its first international conference in the month of April, 1972. The Society has since been a member of The World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA).

Over the years following its inception, the society had for some time existences with few members after the expatriate doctors left the country. With the help of Dr Daka, who served as president for a number of years, the society continued meeting its obligations to the WFSA. The society held a number of international conferences during this period.  It was, however, in 2016 that the Society was revived with a new executive coming into existence with Dr Hazel Mumpansha serving as its president. It has had a well-attended international conference with the first president attending virtually.
