Remembering Dr Hamraev Fadhulla

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Dr Hamraev Fathulla. Originally from Uzbekistan, Dr Hamraev spent his long career providing the people of Zambia with safe anaesthetic services at the University Teaching Hospital. He was a mentor and father figure to many of our now-qualified anaesthesiologists, providing many a smile, kind word or even a snack during long working days.
Our deepest condolences to his family during this most difficult time. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

Recommended safest reuse of PPE practices when severe shortages exist

These methods are for safest possible reuse and extended use of PPE in Zambia whilst severe shortages
exist. Best practice is always to use single-use PPE but when sufficient stock is unavailable these methods
can be used to reduce risk to healthcare workers. Safe removal of PPE (doffing) is essential for reducing contamination and risk to healthcare staff and patients. All anaesthesia providers should know SAZ donning and doffing guidance and be trained in these
procedures.

Remembering Dr Anthony Chisakuta

Dr Anthony Chisakuta, July 4, 1958 – March 3, 2021

he Society of Anaesthests of Zambia (SAZ) is deeply saddened by the untimely death of Dr Anthony Chisakuta. Dr Chisakuta was a great asset to the society. He was a great mentor, a fountain of wisdom and strength and knowledge and he was selflessly committed and invested in the growth of the anaesthesia profession. Dr Chisakuta was chairperson of the SAZ education committee and he represented the society in the region and internationally at many fora.

He served as national lead for postgraduate training and was involved in the formative years of the postgraduate training program for specialist anaesthests in Zambia. As a member of the Zambia Working Group (ZWG) and the College of Anaesthesiologists of East, Central and Southern Africa (CANECSA) executive he later on began working in mentorship and leadership. He was working as consultant anaesthesiologist and head of anaesthesia at Beit CURE Hospital in Lusaka at the time of his passing.
He is irreplaceable and he will be deeply missed by us all.

The Association and its CIG partners have published a position statement on the environment and sustainability. The document outlines our priorities and includes a statement of intent. The climate emergency is a global crisis, and we welcome our partners’ commitment to work to ensure a safe and healthy future for all our members and their patients. In the UK and Ireland the Association will continue to highlight actions anaesthetists can take to improve sustainability, and to work with governments and other organisations on reducing the impact of the healthcare sector on the environment.
